System Operator I-IV, Hays

Department: Energy Supply
Location: Hays, KS

General Function:
As a System Operator, you will play a critical role in maintaining the real-time reliability and safety of the electric generation, transmission, and distribution systems. This position involves continuous monitoring of the electric grid, coordinating system switching operations with field personnel, and directing safe and efficient operation of the electric network under both normal and emergency conditions. Your decisions directly impact service reliability, personnel safety, and grid stability, making this a highly responsible and technically demanding role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor Electric system using an Energy Management System or SCADA platform.
  • Analyze system conditions and coordinate switching orders with field crews.
  • Respond rapidly to abnormal or emergency conditions to ensure safety and minimize service interruptions.
  • Maintain real-time communications with internal departments, neighboring utilities, and regional coordination authorities.
  • Implement operating procedures, contingency plans, and emergency protocols.
  • Document all system events, communications, and operating decisions clearly and accurately.

Education:

  • High school graduate or equivalent required, post-secondary education in business management, finance, economics, electrical technology, or related field preferred.

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous utility industry experience is helpful but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in computer use, especially spreadsheets and databases.
  • Excellent communication skills—both oral and written—are essential, especially under pressure.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during emergencies or high-stress situations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for coordinating with diverse teams and handling difficult interactions.

Working Conditions:

  • Indoors in the System Control Center.
  • shift work required in a 24/7 operational environment.
  • Requires some holiday coverage and emergency response.
  • Work is both mentally demanding and technically detailed, particularly during abnormal or emergency situations.
  • Extensive on the job training opportunities to develop skills necessary to meet requirements of a System Operator.
