Engineering Intern, Hays

Location: Hays, KS

Job Summary (Overall Purpose of the Position)

To provide support for the development, planning, construction and operation of electric distribution and transmission facilities for efficient, safe and reliable system operations.

Job Duties - Responsibilities – Tasks

  1. Prepare basic engineering calculations following standard methods and principles used in similar engineering analyses.
  2. Assist with basic equipment selection research.
  3. Supports engineering model integrity by adding new customers, posting work orders, and applying model corrections as identified.
  4. Conduct electric system analysis using system planning and design software.
  5. Familiarize with Midwest construction and design standards and applicable engineering codes.
  6. Maintain engineering records and lists as required.
  7. Assist with reports within the Engineering Department.
  8. As requested, assist with field work to gather information and/or inspect distribution facilities.
  9. Assist with long range planning studies.
  10. Coordinate design with other personnel working on same project to minimize design conflicts, as assigned.
  11. Become familiar with capabilities of Midwest’s Outage Management System.
  12. Prepare assigned reports, studies, or analysis for project.
  13. Maintain and organize records, lists, schedules, etc. for engineering projects.
  14. Promote safe working habits and follow all safety rules and regulations of Midwest Energy, Inc.
  15. Develop and maintain internal and external working relationships for maximum effectiveness in serving Midwest Energy customers and communities.

Education and Experience

  1. Currently pursuing a degree with a sophomore standing or higher in engineering, pre-engineering, or physics with interest in engineering related fields.
  2. Completion of Engineering, Physics, Electronic Circuits, and Electricity related coursework preferred but not required.
  3. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  4. Strong computer skills.
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

Position Details

  • Internship Period: Mid-May 2027 through Mid-August 2027
  • Expected Schedule: Approximately 40 hours per week
  • Rate of Pay: $25.00 per hour
